Calls to India from the UK can be so painfully expensive, because of expensive international call charges. But what if you’ve got friends and family in India? Or if part of your business is based in India? If that’s the case, perhaps you don’t talk to them as often as you’d like to. You’ll be glad to know, then, that new VoIP technology means that everyone can now make cheap calls to India.

Got loved ones or friends in India? Want to stay in touch with them? You probably know how lovely it is to have a long talk with someone you haven’t heard from for a while. The cost of calls is a serious problem for the business sector, too. Businesses with hubs based in India simply can’t afford to cut corners when it comes to communicating. With both India-based businesses and families with relatives in India, demand for cheap calls to India has soared.

Luckily, there is now a way to make calls to India that are either ridiculously cheap – or even completely free. Thanks to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, you can now make cheap calls to India and other countries that, if not free, are so cheap that you’ll never again worry about your phone bill.

So what is VoIP, and how does it work? Basically, VoIP uses specialist software to use broadband to enable you to make calls, not a traditional phone line. It turns your voice into a

digital signal that can travel across the internet, then back into a voice at the other end.

Here’s how you could use VoIP to make cheap calls to friends, family and business contacts in India.

Computer to Computer
This enables you to make free international calls to India by using VoIP software. The software, basically, turns your computer into a telephone. You and the person you want to call in India, both need a computer, a broadband connection, and a headset/ microphone/ speaker (your computer or laptop may have these built in). And you must both be signed up to an appropriate VoIP providers (such as Skype or MSN).

This system suits many people, particularly as the calls to India are free. But it does mean that you are both need to have access to a computer. You both need to make sure your providers will be compatible. The system is also totally separate from your traditional landline service, so you can’t just pick up the phone and dial any number in India you need/want to – it has to be PC to PC. You can use this to make calls to other landlines or mobiles in India, but if you do, you will be charged for the calls by the minute. And the call quality may not be up the standard you’re used to.

The traditional way – Telephone to Telephone
Perhaps you’d like more flexibility – you want to be able to use your home telephone as normal, but still benefit from the cheap calls that VoIP offers. You’d rather not be tied to your PC, or be obliged to use headsets. If so, there are VoIP providers who will let you do this. With this method, you sign up to a paid call plan with a VoIP provider. The VoIP provider will send you an adapter that allows you to plug the base of your normal handset into your computer or router. This uses VoIP technology to make calls to India that are, in practice, phone-to-phone’, but through broadband, not through a traditional landline.

What you do in this case, once you’ve signed up, is just pick up your handset as before, dial the international number, and the other person’s phone rings in India. They will probably not even know you’re using VoIP, the call quality’s that good. And they don’t need to have anything like broadband or even a computer themselves.

Just think what it would mean to know that you can enjoy relaxed conversations to India, at any time of the day or night. You don’t need to wait for a reason to call – you can simply call and chat about family news. After all, it’s contact like this that builds relationships and bonds families and friends together.

And if you’re a UK-based business with some of your operations out-sourced to India, you can easily keep tabs on work events and colleague news at that end of the business.

How To Configure Voip/sip Client For Windows Mobile 6 Sip

Configuring VOIP and SIP client services for Windows Mobile 6 SIP is simple. Typically, devices that support such services for Windows Mobile 6 SIP come pre-bundled and installed. However, if you are getting a free phone, as opposed to purchasing a new Softphone, you might need to manually configure VOIP and the SIP client.

• To configure VOIP and SIP client for a Windows Mobile 6 SIP compatible phone, you must first check in the Windows directory to ensure the following files are present: rtcdll.dll, voipphonecanvas.dll, dnsapi.dll, and ipdialplan.xml.

o NOTE: If any of these files are not present before configuring VOIP and SIP client for Windows Mobile 6 SIP, you will have to go out to the net and download the files to ensure you are ready to configure before actually doing so. Configuring services for Windows Mobile 6 SIP without having these files will disable many important functions and processes that you need for your Windows Mobile 6 SIP compatible phone.

• Next, you will need to create a setup XML file to hold and store all applicable programs and applications to keep your Windows Mobile 6 SIP compatible phone running properly. This is the file directory you will be transferring the actual device.

• Then, create a _setup.xml file with all parameters for your Windows Mobile 6 SIP applications. If you do not know how to do this, there are many files available online that are quick and easy to run.

• Next, type the following command into a dos prompt: cabarc N myvoipsettings.cab_setup.xml. This command will go out and access the file you just made. Transfer this file onto your Windows Mobile 6 SIP phone.

• Rename the setup file with a .txt file extension. It will be transferred as _setup.xml and you change it to _setup.txt. Although it is essential, this step is often missed in configuring services for Windows Mobile 6 SIP.

• Delete _sip_provider_name_ and enter the name of your actually SIP/VOIP provider. Your mobile device must be aware of what SIP/VOIP service provider you are using.

• Change _account_and_password to your actual username and password. This will ensure you can get into the administrator tools for your device in t

• Where you see SIP: user@sip_host.com_, replace with your SIP address.

• Go back and save the file as _setup.xml and the run the cabarc N voip.cab_setup.xml.

• Now, you will need to go back and ensure the provisioning/parameter setting worked. To do this, check for the file ProvOSIPSettings file is present under the file tree of WindowsSystemVoIP.

Configuring services for Windows Mobile 6 SIP compatible phones can be simple if you have the right files setup beforehand. Lacking in any of these steps above will lead to a real mess; you would basically have to delete everything and start over. Your Windows directories will never know what you are trying to do unless you have the right dll files. Following the steps above will ensure you have a Windows Mobile 6 SIP client that works properly.

Finding A Good Low-rate Voip Provider To Make Cheap Phone Calls

If you’re looking for a way of making cheap phone calls, you’ll have come across new technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (Voice over IP, or VoIP). Most people realise that the decision about whether to use VoIP is really a no-brainer. It allows you to make calls over the internet, instead of through a traditional phone line, so the amount of money it can save you can be significant. But once you’ve made the decision to use VoIP to make cheap calls, what next? How can you make sure you pick a good low-rate VoIP provider?

If you’re convinced by VoIP, but you haven’t yet signed up, then don’t rush in. Curb your excitement about the thought of all those cheap international calls, take your time and consider the following points.

1. Reputation. Customer feedback is worth more than anything a company says about itself. Does the low rate VoIP provider, as well as offering cheap calls, also enjoy a solid, positive reputation and the goodwill of its customers? Can you find any comments or reviews from existing customers? Some VoIP providers will offer testimonials. What do these say? Are they independent? Perhaps you can find someone who already uses that particular VoIP provider, and who might be willing to give you a candid view about the service.

2. Call plans. Think about what countries you call, and how frequently. Check the VoIP provider’s call plans. How many are there? What countries are included? There’s no point signing up for a call plan that includes a raft of countries that you’re never likely to call, or will call only infrequently. Does the provider offer a basic call plan for UK landlines only, as well as one that includes dozens of countries around the world, and various call plans in between? Beware of a VoIP who offers call plans that simply seem to good to be true – it could be a sign that they’re in financial difficulty. Expect to pay from around £6 a month for the most basic, UK-only call plans, and around £20 a month for a call plan that covers numerous countries, with a range of call plans in between.

3. International tariffs. Check the VoIP provider’s international rates for calls to countries that aren’t included in your call plan. You don’t want to have a wonderful, low-rate

call plan and find yourself stung by high rates whenever you call a number that’s not included in your plan. Fortunately, because VoIP uses broadband to make calls, you’ll find that even these rates are much, much lower than those offered by traditional phone companies.

4. Tie-ins and fees. Does the VoIP provider want you to commit to a contract? Is there a trial period? What are the penalties, if any, if you cancel your service? Are there any set-up fees, admin fees, equipment fees, postage fees, or any other kind of charges? And you want to make sure that there is a money-back guarantee, no-questions asked trial period? Check the VoIP provider’s website to see how transparent they are about their charges. Ideally, they should be absolutely clear about what you will be charged, and when.

5. Flexibilty. Will the VoIP provider allow you to choose a dialing code? Some will give their customers the option of deciding what dialing code they want – either one that’s local to where they live, like a traditional phone service, or one that’s local to their customers or family. It might not be relevant to your needs right now, but it could be something that would be of great benefit in the future.

6. Customer service and technical support. What’s the customer service and technical support like? Can you contact someone for free, by phone or email, when you need to? Is there someone available to talk to you at any time? Some of the fiercest criticisms of telecoms companies are the result of poor customer service and dreadful technical support. You really don’t want this to ever be a headache, should you ever need it, so make sure that the VoIP provider puts the customer first in these respects.

7. Features. What features does the VoIP offer? Traditional service providers often charge for features such as voicemail, call-waiting, caller id, call forwarding etc. Does the VoIP provider charge for such basic features? Or do they offer them for free?

8. Add-ons. What does the VoIP provider offer in terms of chargeable services you can bolt on to your account later, if you want to? These days, thanks to advances in technology, you can get really useful add-ons. You might, for example, be able to make calls from your computer or laptop, add a second phone line, or create a virtual’ phone number that rings to your own number, so that friends or family who live abroad can call you cheaply.

9. Transparency and clarity. Does the VoIP provider’s site look professional? Is it easy to understand and navigate? Can you find what you want straight away? Is the language clear, concise and unambiguous? Does it inspire confidence that this is a trustworthy VoIP provider?

10. Keep your number. Can you keep your original telephone number if you want to? Is it a straightforward process?

If you’re already convinced (and you should be!) by the cost savings of using VoIP providers to make cheap international calls, it’s best not to rush into signing up with any old provider. Think carefully about the issues listed above, choose your VoIP provider wisely, and cheap calls will be all yours. You’ll never look back.

More than 90 percent of PCs or end-devices access the broadband Internet using private IP addresses. These private IP addresses get mapped into real Internet addresses using a mechanism called Network Address Translation (NAT), which is implemented in all broadband access devices (also called broadband routers such as from LinkSys, NetGear or SMC) and sometimes also in the service provider network.

NAT traversal refers to the problem, and solution thereof, where two computers behind NATs sometimes fail to communicate with each other for features such as IM, VoIP, file-sharing and online-games. If you are building devices, applications or services involving Internet communications, then NAT traversal should be a concern.

Also since SBCs implement proprietary protocols products from one vendor do not work with those from another vendor.

In some cases, developers have developed proprietary NAT traversal solutions (such as Skype) that do not interoperate with others.
